In pictures: Deadly India landslide hits Pune village

Rescue workers are racing against time to find survivors of a landslide that has claimed at least 30 lives and buried some 40 homes in a village in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Officials fear that up to 200 people may be trapped in the debris.

Teams worked through Thursday night in Malin village in Pune district but rain was hampering efforts to search for scores of people presumed trapped under the mud and debris.

A large part of a nearby hill collapsed on Malin, and its people were covered with tonnes of loose earth, mud and rocks.

More than 24 hours after disaster struck, more than 370 rescuers are digging through the debris to try to reach survivors, but hopes are getting dimmer.

Malin is home to between 150 and 200 tribal people. The landslide hit the village early on Wednesday while people were sleeping, burying the occupants inside their homes.

Most of Malin's inhabitants are believed to have been trapped in some 44 houses buried under the rubble.

Ten people have been rescued from the wreckage and taken to hospital.
