Japan rain sparks fatal Hiroshima landslides

At least 27 people have been killed after heavy rain sparked landslides in Japan's Hiroshima prefecture, officials say.

The equivalent of a month's rain fell in the 24 hours up to Wednesday morning, prompting landslides in a residential area near a mountain in the Hiroshima city outskirts.

The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says residents may have had "just a few minutes to escape".
