Indian boxer Mary Kom wins Asian Games gold in Incheon

MC Mary Kom has become the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games in South Korea.

The five-time world champion came from behind to beat Kazakhstan's Zhaina Shekerbekova in the 51kg category.

Mary Kom, who won the Olympics bronze in London in 2012, was the subject of a recent Bollywood biopic.

Meanwhile, Indian lightweight Sarita Devi has refused to accept her bronze in protest at a controversial decision in favour of a home boxer at Incheon.

Sarita Devi has been upset since South Korea's Park Ji-Na was controversially awarded their semi-final bout on Tuesday and India's chief coach Blas Iglesias Fernandes had protested calling it "a clear case of a pre-determined judgement".

Mary Kom beat Shekerbekova 2-0, reported the Press Trust of India.

Mother of twin boys, Mary Kom is from the remote north-eastern state of Manipur and has been dubbed "Magnificent Mary" by her fans who have taken to social media sites to congratulate her.

"Gold for Mary Kom at Asian Games, does India proud again. Congrats," tweeted Daring Jha.

"Mary Kom punched her way to Gold. Another proud moment for India. You are truly an inspiration! Gold for Mary Kom :)," wrote Anurag Bothra.

Manali Kulkarno tweeted: "A good day for India in Asian Games. Gold for Mary Kom. She makes India proud again. Congratulations #MaryKom Take a bow!"

"Gold for Mary Kom - What a proud moment for her and for India," wrote Shaili Chopra.

Sports statistician Mohandas Menon pointed out that it was the "15th GOLD for Mary Kom in her international boxing career since her first in the World Amateur Boxing Championships at Antalya, Turkey in 2002".
