Whitlam: 'A radical, reforming politician'

The former Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam has died at the age of ninety-eight. Mr Whitlam's Labour Party ended twenty-three years of conservative rule in the 1970s.

His government was only in power for two years, but he forced through major changes including universal health care and free university education. He also abolished military conscription.
