An American woman says she lost the sight in one of her eyes after getting mud in it during a fun run.

Brittany Williams, who is 23, took part in a mud run in Dallas and said that after the race she felt that something was in her eye.

She had it flushed out by doctors but 12 hours later she couldn't see on one side.

Doctors found that she had scratched her cornea and a bacterial infection had then damaged the area.

She woke up and her eye was white and she couldn't see out of it.

ABC News reports that she initially stayed calm until her boyfriend saw her eye and called doctors for help.

Brittany said: "I could tell by my fiancé's reaction, he's in the medical field and started losing it a little bit, and I knew at that point something was really wrong."

Doctor Amy Zhang said that because she was wearing contact lenses the problem was magnified.

"It's a perfect petri dish."

Brittany is now using drops every few hours to help her eye heal but she still can't see out of it.

"When I opened my eye, it was just like white. The whole room was white. It just completely melted off of my eye."

Williams said she needs to wait a year to heal before she can be considered for a cornea transplant.

She is planning a fundraiser to help cover her medical bills that she said are more than $100,000 (£64,000).
