You can now turn off Instagram comments (or will be able to very soon)

Instagram has updated its safety features to allow users to turn off comments for individual posts for the first time.

The company says it's part of its latest attempt to "keep the platform safe and welcoming for everyone".

It is also now possible to remove followers.

They may be things you've heard of before - but until now only a small number of verified accounts have had these privileges.

The new features will start rolling out to everyone's accounts in the next few weeks.

Before now if you've approved a follower, giving them the chance to see your private updates, there was no way of removing them without blocking them.

But the new update makes it simple.

You just go to your list of followers and tap the '…' next to any person's name and the person won't be notified that you removed them as a follower.

The company released its figures for 2016 at the beginning of December and Selena Gomez has the most followed account aside from Instagram itself.

She also has eight of the 10 most-liked celebrity photos and seven of the top 10 celebrity videos this year.

Justin Bieber has recently branded Instagram "hell" on stage at his gig in London.

He deleted his account in August after he and his then girlfriend Sofia Richie were getting sent abuse.

Instagram says the updates are just the beginning of their work to make sure it's a safe app to use.

It has brought in a feature which helps you anonymously report when you think a friend may be thinking about injuring themselves.

Instagram says its team will then connect your friend to organisations that offer help whatever time of the day or night it is.
