Football Focus: Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool 'to win titles'

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah says he dreams of winning the Premier League and wants to do "something special" in this season's Champions League.

The Anfield club can go second in the league by beating West Ham on Saturday and lead Porto 5-0 after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Egypt international Salah has scored 22 goals in 26 league games since signing from Roma for £34m last June.

"I came to here to win titles," the 25-year-old told Football Focus.

Ex-Chelsea player Salah made three substitute appearances totalling 30 minutes when the Blues won the league in 2014-15, ending the season on loan in Italy at Fiorentina.

He spent the following season on loan at Roma before joining the Serie A side for £12m in August 2016.

Salah has made a huge impact on his return to the Premier League and hopes his efforts can propel Liverpool to a first trophy since 2012.

"I can tell the fans we work 100% to try and win something for the club," he said.

"It's a long time since the club won the league. It's my dream to win the Premier League - but I want to win it with this club."

'Much more to come from me'

As well as scoring 22 times, Salah has also provided seven assists in an outstanding start to his Liverpool career - but he reserves praise for his Anfield team-mates.

"It's easy to play with this kind of quality," he said. "If you look at me now and five years ago, everything has changed both mentally and physically.

"I'm trying to improve myself every day. I always like to put myself under pressure to improve more.

"I give all my life to football, I only think about football. This is what is on my mind all the time."

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah wins 2017 BBC African Footballer of the Year

Salah has come a long way since making daily nine-hour round trips from his home village of Nagrig to train and play for Arab Contractors (El Mokawloon) in Cairo at the age of 14.

He travelled by bus - sometimes changing five times - and those sacrifices he made as a teenager to follow his dream of reaching the top have paid off.

This summer, Salah will feel the weight of a nation on his shoulders when Egypt take on hosts Russia, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia at the World Cup. It is a challenge he is relishing.

"I gave a lot for football because I wanted to be as professional as possible. I was travelling nine hours a day," said Salah, the 2017 BBC African Footballer of the Year.

"I want all Egyptian people to follow my way to improve themselves. We are a huge country. We have many children. I want everyone to dream and feel they can do something."

Very rare in these days to see a top quality player as humble as him. If you don't know his story, look it up. Did it the hard way and appears to value what he's got. He's worshipped in Egypt and LFC are lucky to have him - good luck Mo.

If Liverpool can keep hold of their current attackers whilst adding a better keeper, then there's no reason that next season they couldn't contest the title.

Keita coming in will bolster their midfield and the attack speaks for itself.

Great, entertaining team to watch this year - like City - attack attack attack!

For me he's the player of the year so far. Not only the quantity of goals, the quality of them are great, he get's assists, rarely loses the ball, great work rate and it's his first year back in the prem.

I wouldn't begrudge Liverpool a title success if it were to happen, because when you put rivalries aside, we are talking about a club with great history, traditions and a certain way of doing things.

Prior to the big money coming into the game, Liverpool were a dominant force and involved in some of English football's finest moments.

For that alone, they should be respected.

@32 why do Man United fans feel the need to bring every HYS about Liverpool down to gutter level, I'd say "I hope your fellow United fans are proud" but they probably are!

I hope Mo gets his wish – any true football fan surely wants the best players to win big prizes, especially such a dedicated player. Similarly I wouldn't begrudge DeBruyne winning trophies. But obviously any article that mentions Liverpool winning the title is going to attract the trolls, so thanks to the BBC for opening up the comments section so that 'fans' of other clubs can 'have their say'.

From a neutral's point of view I would rather Liverpool or Spurs win the title over the likes of the plastic clubs such as Man U, City or Chelsea.

Liverpool will be challenging for the title. However, as a Liverpool I am not holding my breath because the competition is intense, and arguably at the most intense in the Premier League era.

Spurs fan here. I think Salah's the best match winner in the League since Suarez. Don't listen to the all the boring wallies (including the media) who want to sell your best players for you on every twitter feed, column and football show. It would be great to see Spurs and Liverpool fighting for titles rather than these oil clubs. I'd even stomach Arsenal in there, after a 10 year break of course!

Totally understand where he is coming from. As a Liverpool fan, 1 trophy (a league cup) in over 10 years is not enough to keep world class players. Yes we play amazing football but realistically we still have a huge battle to get top 4 and if we miss out there will be serious questions about what will happen to our top players. Same for Spurs. Players won't stay forever, we will need trophies!

Its my dream to win the Premier league with Arsenal, but I'm 40, fat and not very good.

Instead I also set smaller attainable goals such as not burning my fish finger sandwich. Salah could learn a lot from me.

Mo is turning into a great player, Liverpool are fine attacking side but they have sacrificed defensive solidity to boost their attacking options.

City have scored almost 20 more goals and conceded 10 fewer, until Liverpool address this imbalance then league success will be difficult to achieve. They are far more likely to win one the cups first.

Hopefully the CL good luck Liverpool.

It’s an article about Salah, he’s only said what Sanchez said when he joined Man U and they haven’t won a title for a few years
