US ready to help Chile: Obama

10:28am AEST Sunday 28 February 2010

US President Barack Obama announced that the United States stands ready to assist Chile in rescue and recovery efforts if required.

At a press conference today, Obama expressed his condolences to the Chilean people and said that the US has resources positioned to deploy should the Chilean government ask for help.

The Chilean earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks and has resulted in tsunami warnings being issued in countries throughout the Pacific region.

Evacuations have also occurred in coastal areas in some countries.
